Sneinton Market: Eviction notices handed to 21 tenants

MORE than 20 tenants of units next to Sneinton Market are being evicted to make way for a new creative area. Notices were handed out to traders over the course of the last week and Nottingham City Council says it will help them find alternative places.

Human Rights Report Card Gives U.S. Poor Grades on Housing

The National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty released its 2013 Human Right to Housing Report Card today, marked globally as human rights day, reviewing U.S. compliance with the human right to housing in the context of American homelessness over the past year. The report card found that while there were areas of improvement, much more needs to be done.

South African Constitutional Court affirms tenants’ rights to challenge excessive rents

The South African Constitutional Court issued a groundbreaking decision on this case, brought by ESCR-Net member SERI (South Africa), affirming the rights of tenants to challenge excessive rents and unfair lease terminations. The Court found that the Rental Housing Act forbid private landlords or tenants from engaging in unfair practices, and determined that the term “unfair practice” must be interpreted in light of the right of access to adequate housing contained in the South African Constitution.
