Evict Them in Five Easy Steps

In every part of the world people are forced out of their homes without warning or consultation, without access to justice and without compensation. These forced evictions often involve violence. They destroy livelihoods and social networks, and drive people deeper into poverty often resulting in many becoming homeless and destitute. This is why Amnesty International and WITNESS, along with the design firm Pentagram, got together to produce this short animation showing how governments and corporations forcibly evict people.

UN experts raise human rights concerns over POSCO’s plans for $12 billion steel plant in India

A U.N. panel of experts urged South Korean steel giant POSCO on Tuesday to suspend plans for a $12 billion steel plant over concerns the project threatened the rights and livelihoods of tens of thousands in eastern India. The call follows a June report by rights groups saying that illegal land seizures threatened to displace 22,000 people and deprive thousands more of their means of existence in the state of Orissa.

UN scrutinising impact of UK housing benefit changes

BBC: A senior United Nations official is examining the impact of changes to UK housing benefit on the human rights of low-income households. Raquel Rolnik is meeting tenants across Britain affected by the shake-up. Since April, social tenants in England, Scotland and Wales who are deemed to have surplus bedrooms have seen their housing benefit reduced. Ministers say it tackles an unfair “spare room subsidy” but opponents have dubbed it a “bedroom tax”.

The Guardian: A senior UN official is in the UK to scrutinise the impact of the bedroom tax on the human rights of people in low-income households. The special rapporteur on housing, Raquel Rolnik, is on a two-week tour of cities where she will meet tenants affected by the policy as well as officials, campaigners and academics.

UN rights office voices concern over forced evictions of Palestinians in West Bank

The United Nations human rights office today expressed concern over the forced eviction of Palestinians in the West Bank as a result of recent demolitions carried out by Israeli authorities, and noted this could amount to a violation of international law. The demolitions began on 19 August and have been carried out by Israeli authorities in at least six different locations, including East Jerusalem, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said.

High time for justice in Badia East

The Social and Economic Rights Action Center (SERAC) and Amnesty International have published a joint report on the February 23, 2013 mass forced eviction of at least 9,000 persons from the Oke-Ilu-Eri and Ajeromi villages of Badia East, Lagos. Building on SERAC’s longstanding engagement with the affected community, the report marshals evidence given by victims, Lagos State Government officials, and other witnesses.
