In Turkey, the process of ‘Urban Transformation’ has been gaining momentum since the 2000’s. It started with the excuse of protecting the old settlements and cultural heritage areas. Tokludede, an old Ottoman neighborhood in the historical center of Istanbul, is one of about 50 neighborhoods under threat of demolition. After it was declared a renewal area, most of the residents have been forced to leave. Some are still resisting.

Tokludede district in Istanbul, Turkey, is suffering from urban regeneration projects that are maintained across different parts of city. The area is one of the most important part of the city because of its historical and architectural background. People living here are exposed to forced eviction and they have no economic power to move their houses.
The UN Human Rights Council has already made available for viewing the report with all communications sent by the Special Rapporteurs, as well as the answers received by the Member States.

The documentary shows the eviction of the Sukulele neighborhood in Istanbul due to “urban transformation”. Most of the residents were Roma and they were relocated to another area, not compatible with their budget and their life condition.
