International donors pledge billions for recovery of Darfur

The International Donor Conference for Reconstruction and Development in Darfur wrapped up today after two days of pledging which organizers had hoped would raise $7.2 billion to cover reconstruction and development of Darfur over a six-year period. According to reports, at least $3.7 billion was pledged.

Unity State Returnees Given Land After Two Year Wait in Sudan

Nearly 900 returnees have been allocated land in Bentiu town for the first time after two years of being stranded in the state upon arrival from the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, ahead of South Sudan’s independence in July 2011. On Friday officials from the oil-rich state officially handed over four blocks of land to the returnees. For the past two years returnees have been stranded at Bentiu Port and Transit camp just eight kilometres from Bentiu town. The transit camp housed 400-500 people.

Displaced Zam Zam face harsh conditions in Darfur

Around 1200 newly displaced families in Zam Zam camp in East Jebel Marra and another 500 newly displaced families from Shawa area are facing harsh living conditions; no humanitarian aid and no sheets or blankets during the cold winter days in Darfur. A camp activist from Zam Zam camp told Radio Dabanga on Friday, 28 December, that his family is without food or non-food aid, despite promises made by organizations to provide emergency support immediately after completing the registration process. He stressed that despite the crisis the families are facing; new displaced families are arriving daily from East Jebel Marra.
