Nigeria forces thousands from floating slum

Thousands of people have been left homeless in the Nigerian city of Lagos after a recent government-led eviction of an almost 200-year old shantytown. During last week’s eviction of the Makoko slum, home to about 100,000 people, residents were given only 72 hours to evacuate before men in speedboats were sent to destroy their houses.

In Nigeria, Abonnema Wharf Community Demolished By The Rivers State Government

The Social and Economic Rights Action Center (SERAC) strongly condemns the on-going demolition of Abonnema community by the Rivers state government. The invasion and destruction of the homes, properties and businesses of residents of the community without the due process of law is callous, unjust, illegal and a reckless affront to constitutional governance.

Refugees in their homeland (Nigeria)

On the orders of the Nigerian Army, heavily-armed soldiers and mobile police officers invaded Gosa 1 village and demolished homes, businesses, churches, mosques, schools, farmlands, crops, shrines and important cultural relics belonging to indigenous Gbagyi farmers and low-income residents. The demolitions were carried out without prior notice, payment of compensation or provision of alternate shelter, and left thousands homeless, including children, the youth, women and the aged people who had lived on the land from time immemorial.

Nigeria’s urban renewal is trying to bulldoze human rights

The clearing of more than 200,000 people who live on the waterfronts of

Having to stand by and watch helplessly as bulldozers destroy home and
possessions is probably one of the hardest things any person could endure.
Yet that threat looms for
more than 200,000 people who live on the waterfronts of Port Harcourt,
in Rivers State, Nigeria. And for some like Love Bassett Okpadio it
has already become a reality.

Okpadio used to live in Njemanze, an informal settlement on Port Harcourt’s
waterfronts, with her husband and five children. In August 2009, Okpadio
and her family were forcibly evicted from their home which was demolished
under state authorities’ orders.
