Kazakhstan: challenges and ways forward

From September 6th to 13th, the UN Special Rapporteur Raquel Rolnik visited Kazakhstan. After eigth days, she presented a statement to the Government and the press of the country.

ASTANA (13 September 2010) – The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Raquel Rolnik, warned about the high rate of forced evictions carried out in Kazakhstan to give way to large-scale development projects aimed at promoting economic and social development.

Invited by the Government of Kazakhstan, the UN Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing, Raquel Rolnik, visited the country from September 6th to 13th. During the mission, the Rapporteur testified the effects of housing and financial crisis, which caused a number of people the loss of their homes, as well as heard testimonials of forced evictions due to the construction of equipment for the Asian Games.
Moreover, in the imminence of 2010 World Habitat Day, which is annually celebrated in early October by the UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), the Rapporteur prepared a statement emphasizing the importance of thinking housing policies under the perspective of human rights and social justice.

Mission to Kazakhstan

From September 6-13, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Ms. Raquel Rolnik, will visit Kazakhstan. She will meet Government officials, local authorities and civil society organisations, to discuss the progress made and the difficulties encountered by Kazakhstan in the implementation of the right to adequate housing.
