CEDAW: General recommendation No. 30 on women in conflict prevention, conflict and post-conflict situations

In October, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) adopted the General Recommendation No. 30, which deals with the prevention in international and non-international armed conflicts, in situations of foreign occupation, as well as other forms of occupation and the post-conflict phase. The recommendation also refers to other situations of concern to the Committee, such as riots, civil strife and low intensity prolonged political conflicts, ethnic and communal violence, states of emergency and crackdown against mass uprisings, war against terrorism and organized crime.

The primary aim and purpose of the general recommendation is to provide authoritative guidance to States parties on legislative, policy and other appropriate measures to ensure full compliance with their obligations under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women to protect, respect and fulfil women’s human rights. It also builds upon principles articulated in previously adopted general recommendations.
