(English) UN official Raquel Rolnik defends ‘bedroom tax’ stance

(English) September 11, 2013

A UN official has defended her criticism of the UK’s spare room subsidy and has apologised for referring to it as the «bedroom tax».

Raquel Rolnik, the UN special rapporteur on housing, has come under fire from Conservatives for her comments on the government’s housing benefit changes.

Tory chairman Grant Shapps claimed she failed to meet any ministers or officials and was biased.

Speaking to the BBC, Ms Rolnik said she had put in requests for meetings with the ministers for welfare and housing.

She added: «I didn’t have any agenda before coming here».
