(English) Murang’a tenants in Kenya to sue county over eviction order

(English) May 27, 2013

TENANTS at the building that will house the Murang’a county government are challenging an order to vacate the premises. The tenants, who had requested governor Mwangi Wa Iria to let them remain in the building, have been issued a 14-day eviction notice.

The notice from county secretary Ainea Indakwa says the decision was made following security threats to the governor and his deputy Gakure Monyo.

“Due to security threats and lack of space, you are hereby given 14 days to vacate the county government buildings,” the notice says. The tenants include the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers, Kenya Industrial Estates, Murang’a Business and Computer College and Murang’a Hospice.

Other tenants are four media houses and several micro-finance institutions. The tenants have threatened to move to court to block the eviction.

“A 14-day notice is too short for us to secure office space in town. The county government should have given us enough time to leave,” tenant James Mwangi said. He said the county government is not fair in how it is evicting the tenants who have occupied the building for more than 15 years.

On his part, Wa Iria said his government needs space for its employees’ offices. The Star has learned that the decision to evict the tenants was made after a gunman gained entry to the governor’s offices on May 13. The gunman found his way into the guarded building without being noticed.
