Land Commission Continues Consultations in Liberia

The Land Commission is expected to hold a consultative meeting with the media this Wednesday in Monrovia. The one-day meeting, aimed at gathering views and opinions of cross-session of the Liberian population on key issues and recommendations advanced in the draft Land Rights Policy, is in continuation of what the Commission started last year.

These consultations target stakeholders and interest groups, including the media. It can be recalled that the Land Commission held it first regional consultative meetings in Tubmanburg, Bomi County from December 5-7, 2012, gathering delegates from Bomi, Cape Mount and Gbarpolu Counties.

Similar consultative meetings were also scheduled to have taken place from January to February, 2013 in Gbarnga Region One, Buchanan Region Two, Zwedru Region Four, Harper Region Five, Bentol Region Six and Monrovia, where the National Validation Conference will be held.

The Commission’s Chairman, Cecil Othello Brandy, during a recent monthly briefing at the Information Ministry, unveiled the draft Land Rights Policy, noting that the draft Land Rights Policy recommendations in four categories covers Private, Customary, Government and Public Land.

Brandy called on journalists to assist the Land Commission in providing the necessary outlets for the general public to discuss, and debate all of the provisions in the draft Land Rights Policy statement in the electronic and print media.

Earlier, he provided an update on activities being undertaken by the Commission since its establishment and identified areas for future assistance, during the Information Ministry’s regular press briefing. Before unveiling the draft Land Rights Policy statement, Brandy made a presentation on the draft Land Rights Policy to the President and cabinet.

According to a 11 page Land Commission’s regional consultative meetings on Draft Land Rights Policy document titled: What are your views, comments, inputs…?, the purpose of holding these public consultative meetings and national validation conference is to gather opinion from Liberians on the content of the Draft Land Rights Policy and to obtain approval and support from the public before the policy document is finalized.

It said interest groups consultative meetings are also being held to provide opportunity to address concerns of key stakeholders, including members of the Liberia Bar Association, Liberia Chambers of Commerce, the Liberia Business Association, Civil Society Organizations, Liberia Timber Association, Farmer Organizations, the Association of Female Lawyers of Liberia, as well as the National Women Commission and most especially, rural youths and women groups, among others.
