Special Rapporteur visits Curitiba, Brazil, to address the impacts of the World Cup to the right to housing

The Special Rapporteur, Raquel Rolnik, visited Curitiba, Brazil, to address the issue of the right to housing in the context of sports megaevents and megaprojects. Curitiba, which is capital of Paraná state, will be one of the host-cities of the 2014 Soccer World Cup in Brazil.

The working visit was part of an event held by the Ministério Público of the Paraná state, in partnership with the Tutorial Education Program of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) Law School. The main objective of the visits and meetings is to discuss the situation of the communities menaced with eviction.

During two days, at the beginning of October, the Rapporteur participated at many activities. On the 4th, she took part at a conference at the Ministério Público of the Paraná state auditorium, which was live broadcast online.

On the 5th, the Rapporteur visited the following communities: Nova Costeira, Quissisana and Jardim Suíssa, from Aeroporto Afonso Pena, and the communities at Guarituba, which were affected by  the construction of the Corredor Metropolitano.
