(English) December 20, 2012

Housing Minister Soita Shitanda has asked slum dwellers to be ready for the upcoming slum upgrading programme in Nairobi.

Speaking in Kibera Soweto Slums yesterday during the groundbreaking ceremony of Seefar Apartments located within Highrise Estate in the area, the minister noted that it will take collective responsibility to see Kenya’s Vision 2030 dream of having cheap and decent affordable housing for all achieved.

“We all know that under the Vision 2030 blue print, the Government ought to provide better housing facilities for its citizenry. Why is it that some of us are misusing the available units?” he posed.

According to Shitanda, the Government, individuals and private developers ought to ensure a slum free nation.

He said, “Once everyone plays their part, there will be no more unsightly and dilapidated buildings in our cities and towns.”

Kibera slums is arguably the biggest slum in the entire East and Central Africa but the Government is engaging in slum upgrading programmes that will see the slum dwellers moved to better housing units.
