WOMEN in Kakamega want to own land as a way of fighting poverty. Kakamega county small farmers chairlady Jane Sayo said mothers carry the burden of feeding the family and should therefore be trusted with land management.
Speaking yesterday at Khwisero during the World Food Day celebrations Sayo said the county’s poverty index has remained high at 60 per cent. She said if the women are allowed to manage the land, the poverty level will reduce.
Despite the good fertile soils and sufficient rainfall experienced in the region because land management has been left to men who are held up with other duties for national building. Sayo said women in the county are not happy with the government for offering services on a demand-driven basis.
“We are weak creatures who cannot throw stones and protest on the streets so that the government can deliver essential services to us. Let the Kenya government give back services to taxes paid by citizens” demanded Sayo. The celebrations were sponsored by Action Aid whose theme was Invest in women farmers for strong cooperatives.
