500 Families Homeless in Land Row in Kenya

October 8, 2012

More than 500 families from Laini Moja in Kitale spent the night in the cold after their houses were demolished by alleged Matisi Cooperative Society members.

It is alleged that the Matisi Cooperative Society claim that the families settled in their land and hired street boys and goons who demolished their shelters.

Led by Sylvia Naipei, the residents lamented that the case concerning the plot is at Kitale court and the hearing will be tomorrow and wondered why the society used hooliganism to destroy their houses.

“The court ruled that we move away, but we appealed against the ruling whereby the case is slated to be heard tomorrow” said Naipei. She regretted that the families also lost phones and cash because such valuable items could not be salvaged because no notice to vacate the land had been issued.

“Imagine that Iam my household breadwinner with three children lost my two phones, and cash, now will I really do” she regretted. Area Councillor Simon Lozi condemned the incident saying the government should immediately investigate the matter and those behind the vice be arrested and be prosecuted.

He added the families settled on the farm thirty years ago and wondered why they were being mistreated by “the rich”. “Most of the settlers of the plot are low income learners, why are the rich mistreating them as if they are not human beings? posed Lozi.
