World Habitat Day: time to rethink the financialization of housing – Newsletter #26

In this World Habitat Day, whose theme is “Changing cities, building opportunities”, the Rapporteur calls attention to the need of reviewing some paradigms during these times of housing crisis. When it comes to adequate housing, it is urgent to reconsider the financialization of housing, which have not been able to promote access to adequate housing to the poorest populations around the world.

Additionally, housing finance and its impact on the right to adequate housing is the theme of the latest thematic report produced by the Rapporteur, which has just been out. The report will be presented to the UN General Assembly on the 29th, in New York. Before that, on the 26th, the Rapporteur will take part in a debate on the theme promoted by academics, activists and organizations from civil society at the City University of New York (CUNY), with live internet streaming.
