(English) Heavy Rains and Floods Cause Massive Destruction in Zamzam IDP Camp in Sudan

(English) August 23rd, 2012

The committee for inventory losses and damages in Zamzam IDP camp revealed on Thursday August 23 that the heavy rains and floods, which hit the camp on Saturday August 18, resulted in the collapse of 800 homes, 730 shelters and fences, 512 latrines and a high school for girls as well as ten kindergarten schools.

In addition, food stocks were ruined and clothes and other properties were damaged.

An activist told Radio Dabanga that state and regional authorities, and international humanitarian organizations did not visit the camps until now. He added that hundreds of families were displaced as a result of the rains and floods. The families are still in the open without shelter, food, medicine and blankets.

Diseases such as malaria, typhoid and diarrhea are spreading among IDPs as a result of the spread of swarms of flies in the morning and mosquitoes in the evening in addition to the complete lack of environmental sanitation.
