August 23rd, 2012

Manyatta MP Emilio Kathuri yesterday asked Embu courts to protect the poor against rich people who have been grabbing their pieces land. Kathuri said it has become a common occurrence in Embu for the wealthy to irregularly acquire land belonging to the poor. He lamented that when the matters move to the court, the rich use the police to terrorise the poor by locking them in police cells and charging with trespass.

He asked Embu magistrates to dismiss cases of trespass with the contempt they deserve. Kathuri was speaking when he graced Judicial Week celebrations in the Embu town which were attended by court officials. He also lamented that succession cases pitying the rich and the poor are usually dragged through adjournments by advocates hired by the rich.

He called for the penalising of advocates used by the wealthy to mistreat the poor. Embu county commissioner Hellen Kiilu called on the courts to be harsh on illicit drinks brewers in order to eradicate killer brews. 14 people died and several others made blind in Muraru, Mbeere South after consuming an illicit brew two weeks ago.
