Rapporteur’s visit to Saint Petersburg

UN Special Rapporteur Raquel Rolnik made use of her stop in Saint Petersburg, on June 30 and July 1st, 2012, to meet representatives of the Russian civil society and learn about the housing situation in the city.

On Saturday, the Rapporteur met with tenants of the so-called “dormitories” bedrooms with communal kitchens and restroom areas – built during years of Soviet Union by companies for their employees -, who now are being evicted, after the company privatization.

On the following day, Raquel Rolnik met people who bought apartments from private entrepreneurs – often promoted by public companies – using their savings, that were tricked by fraudulent construction companies and real estate developers which  had  not deliver the apartments and disappeared  with their money. More than 5000 households only in St Petersburg are facing this situation.
