Housing Finance for the poor is the subject of the next thematic report – Newsletter #21

From July 5th to 13th, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing Raquel Rolnik will have an official visit to Rwanda. Currently, the Rapporteur is working on the elaboration of a new thematic report, which will focus the ways the finance system has been linked to the housing market in order to provide housing to low-income families. In addition, the Rapporteur is working on a leaflet on sports mega-events and the right to adequate housing, which will be published and distributed in the second half of the year.

* Mission to Rwanda
If you or your organization have any information on the right to housing in Rwanda, please send it to us. By doing so, you can contribute to the Rapporteur’s mission to the country, which will take place from July 5th to 13th.

* Thematic Report
Based on the thematic report on the financial crisis and the right to housing, presented by the Rapporteur in 2009, the new report will focus on the international experiences of housing finance for the poor. How have credit, microcredit and subsidies for housing directed to low income families been developing? What are their limits and perspectives? In what way do these experiences contribute – or not – to guarantee the right to adequate housing? Until the beginning of June, the Rapporteur will receive contributions to this report, which will be presented to the UN General Assembly in October. Visit our debate platform to give your contribution. The Special Rapporteur has also developed a questionnaire to solicit information from States, local authorities and civil society for the preparation of the report: to answer click here.

* Sports mega-events
During the second half of the year, the Rapporteur will publish a leaflet on sports mega-events and the right to housing. This is a development of the report presented in 2010 and of the resolution approved in the same year by the UN Human Rights Council. Furthermore, the leaflets on forced evictions will be reprinted.
