Zero Evictions Campaign

The International Alliance of Inhabitants launched the Zero Evictions Campaign at the 4th World Social Forum (Mumbai, January 2004). The aim is to secure housing rights for all. If tenants have to be transferred, decent, secure alternative accommodation should be found in advance and with the agreement of the inhabitants concerned, as per international human rights standards.

‘ Istanbul is Naked’ is a video about people expulsed from some sites in Istabul. The video focus on Sulukule (demolished&evacuated),Tarlabasi (recently evacuated,waiting to be demolished),Tozkoparan (under threat of forced evictions) and TOKI ( Mass Housing) Blocks at Tasoluk (relocation site, showing the ‘myth’ of relocation).

when close to a third of the global population continues to live in slums
and unplanned settlements, often located in areas exposed to serious environmental
risks and hazards,? said the UN Special Rapporteurs on Housing, Raquel
Rolnik, and on Internally Displaced Persons, Chaloka Beyani.

Resistances and Alternatives are the key words chosen by the Liaison Committee, established during the World Assembly of Inhabitants (WAI) in order to unify the Global Campaign for the right to housing and to land from the 16th September until the 31st October this year.

Olympic Evictions Come to Russia

The seaside resort town of Sochi, Russia, is preparing to play host to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Much of that preparation consists of building—arenas, athlete housing, roads and so on. But with an urban population of about 350,000, transforming Sochi into an Olympic village also means tearing down some of the city that’s already there. In the run up to Brazil’s World Cup 2014 and Olympics 2016, thousands of people are being forcefully evicted from their homes to make room for office buildings, stadiums and roads. Video activists are making a stand, producing documentaries to raise awareness, inform and empower communities at risk of eviction.
