Rapporteur’s message after the UK Mission

I have just completed a two-week official mission to the UK to look into the housing situation in the UK – an issue which is at the heart of many UK residents. The visit has generated some questions that I try to answer here.

Land rights and secure tenure fundamental to humanitarian shelter operations

Shelter is one of the first priorities in any humanitarian intervention. Yet humanitarian organizations often struggle to provide shelter to communities affected by conflict or disasters without secure land tenure. Raquel Rolnik, the UN Special Rapporteur on adequate housing, is developing guidelines on security of tenure for the urban poor, which will be presented to the Human Rights Council in March 2014.

Water and Sanitation: UN special rapporteur’s visit to Brazil cancelled by the Government

The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to water and sanitation, Catarina de Albuquerque informs that her visit to Brazil, originally planned to take place from 09 to 19 July was cancelled yesterday by the Brazilian Government.

Report on the São Paulo Consultation on Security of Tenure

The event organized in São Paulo on June 17th, 2013, was attended by 28 people from different regions of the country, including representatives from government, academia, NGOs that work with technical and legal support to urban communities, and social movements.
