PRESS RELEASE – Forced evictions in Cambodia make thousands of people homeless

The following statement on the latest in a series of forced evictions in Cambodia was issued today by the UN Special Rapporteur on adequate housing, Raquel Rolnik. “More than 130 families were forcibly evicted during the night of 23 and 24 January 2009 from Dey Krahorm, in central Phnom Penh to make way for a private company to redevelop the site.

PRESS RELEASE – Newly-appointed Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing to assume functions on 1 May 2008

30 April 2008 – GENEVA– By its resolution 6/27, the United Nations Human Rights Council decided to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living. During its 7th session, the Human Rights Council appointed Ms Raquel Rolnik, a Brazilian national, who will assume her role as the new mandate holder s of 1 May 2008.

Geneva, 7 May: From 12 to 24 April 2007, the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living, Miloon Kothari, conducted a mission to South Africa to examine the status of the realization of the human right to adequate housing, paying particular attention to aspects of gender equality and non-discrimination.
