Murang’a tenants in Kenya to sue county over eviction order

TENANTS at the building that will house the Murang’a county government are challenging an order to vacate the premises. The tenants, who had requested governor Mwangi Wa Iria to let them remain in the building, have been issued a 14-day eviction notice.

Botswana denies eviction plans

Botswana has denied plans to remove hundreds of Bushmen from their land to make way for a wildlife park. Earlier this week, indigenous rights group Survival International claimed authorities were going to evict the community who have been based in the southern settlement of Ranyane for generations.

10,000 families in Wales subjected to repossession or eviction claims in last year

A charity branded the figure “shocking” and the Welsh Government said it was “very concerned” at the effect UK Government welfare reforms and current economic conditions were having on people in Wales. In total, 3,806 claims were started by banks against mortgagees in Wales in 2012/3. Of these, 1,355 ended in bailiffs removing homeowners.

Botswana ‘to evict’ Bushmen: indigenous rights group

The government of Botswana will next week evict hundreds of Bushmen from their land to make way for a wildlife park, indigenous rights group Survival International claimed Friday. The group said the indigenous community based in the south of the country, will be removed Monday and their homes will be destroyed.

New York claims more proof of bank mortgage abuses

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said there is mounting evidence that Bank of America Corp (BAC.N), Wells Fargo and Co (WFC.N) and other banks violated the terms of a settlement designed to end mortgage servicing abuses. Schneiderman – who has said he plans to sue Bank of America and Wells Fargo for failing to live up to their obligations under the deal – said other states had found similar problems.

Indonesia Studying Tighter Mortgage-Loan Rules, Warjiyo Says

Bank Indonesia is studying whether to impose stricter loan-to-value rules for mortgages in regions where property demand is expanding too quickly, Deputy Governor Perry Warjiyo said. The central bank may implement such a plan if the government doesn’t increase the price of subsidized fuel, Warjiyo said in Jakarta today. Higher energy costs would lead to a slowdown in the economy and curb demand for homes, he said. Finance Minister Chatib Basri said May 22 the government plans to raise subsidized fuel prices in June.

Oklahoma rescue efforts go on after deadly tornado

Rescue efforts are proceeding after a deadly tornado tore through an Oklahoma City suburb, with dozens feared dead. The storm destroyed entire blocks of homes and trapped dozens of school children beneath debris. Rescuers were working to reach survivors after a tornado with winds reaching speeds of up to 200 mph (320 kilometers) devastated the city of Moore, just south of Oklahoma City, on Monday.

Vast Oklahoma Tornado Kills Dozens

A giant tornado, a mile wide or more, killed at least 91 people, 20 of them children, as it tore across parts of Oklahoma City and its suburbs Monday afternoon, flattening homes, flinging cars through the air and crushing at least two schools. The injured flooded into hospitals, and the authorities said many people remained trapped, even as rescue workers struggled to make their way through debris-clogged streets to the devastated suburb of Moore, where much of the damage occurred.

Resistance to eviction in Muara Baru, Jakarta, from only a few

Two months after the first row of houses in Muara Baru, North Jakarta, as demolished by the city administration, dozens of squatters remain defiant and are occupying one of the last buildings standing to prevent its destruction. They said that the house, owned by a heavy equipment renter, was their last bastion. The administration could not provide them with a new place after destroying all their shanties, or so they said.
