City of Abbotsford, BC, dumps chicken manure on homeless campsite

Homeless advocate and journalist, James Breckenridge, says the city of Abbotsford has been ‘hunting’ its homeless people for months. This week, a well known camping place for homeless – a small clearing where people live together and watch each others belongings – was hit. The city dumped and spread a significant quantity of chicken manure over the area.

Lagos, Nigeria: Where housing is a luxury

Lagos has over 10 million inhabitants – most of whom are constantly struggling for adequate housing. With an ever-increasing population, a decent place to live has become a luxury for Lagos’s poor majority. On the 19th January 2013, homeless activists and their allies squatted an empty building in the 7th district of Budapest. The activists were arrested and now face misdemeanor charges because of disobeying police instructions.

Tent camp evictions on the rise in Haiti

After the 2010 earthquake, 1.5 million Haitians were forced to live in makeshift tents. Almost three years later, these displaced Haitians are facing a new threat – eviction by alleged landowners and government officials. More than 360,000 people still live in tent camps, according to estimates by the Internal Organization for Migration (IOM). But Haitians who say they own the land these tent camps sit on argue that they should get their land back. And in many cases, the local government authorities are supporting the landowners’ cause. Inclusive approach to urban planning

This is a short film made by Shelter Associates about a city-wide approach to slum rehabilitation. The film focuses on a project that is currently in progress in Sangli & Miraj. The film advocates that an inclusive approach, informed by a city-wide consciousness, and driven by an institutionalized monitoring system, is necessary to ensure tangible, long-lasting change, which results in the elevation of the quality of life of the urban poor.

Take Back the Land Madison video on housing liberation

Watch bellow one of the two videos made by Take Back the Land Madison. The group requests Bank of America to turn a home over to a community land trust so it can be used as affordable housing, instead of evicting their occupants.
