Rapporteur to promote consultation about security of tenure late this month – Newsletter #27


In October, the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing, Raquel Rolnik, will organize a public consultation, in Geneva, as part of the thematic study on security of tenure that she is conducting. In addition, a topic on the issue was created in the virtual platform on the Rapporteur’s site, so everybody can contribute to the debate throughout the project. Also in October, the Rapporteur will take part in a debate about her new report at the City University of New York.

World Habitat Day: time to rethink the financialization of housing – Newsletter #26


In this World Habitat Day, whose theme is “Changing cities, building opportunities”, the Rapporteur calls attention to the need of reviewing some paradigms during these times of housing crisis. When it comes to adequate housing, it is urgent to reconsider the financialization of housing.

Communications report already available in our website – Newsletter #25


In September, all the communications sent by Special Rapporteurs to countries during the last months were publicized and presented to the UN Human Rights Council. The document is already available on our website. In October, on the 29th, Rapporteur Raquel Rolnik will present to the UN General Assembly her report on housing finance and its impact on the right to adequate housing . The report will be presented and discussed publicly at the City University of New York (CUNY) on October 26th.

New Thematic Study: Security of Tenure and Informal Settlements – Newsletter #24


New Study by UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing
Security of tenure is a central component of the right to adequate housing. The new study of the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Raquel Rolnik, seeks to ‘unpack’ the concept of security of tenure and the specific requirements arising from human rights law in this respect. This two-year thematic study will also aim to offer both legal and practical advice on ways to address the variety of tenure issues arising worldwide, and to strengthen security of tenure for those who most need it.

Special Rapporteur concludes mission to Rwanda and presents her preliminary findings – Newsletter # 23


On July 13, the Special Rapporteur Raquel Rolnik concluded her official mission to Rwanda, in Africa. She visited the country at the invitation of Rwanda Government and, at the occasion, met with members of the government and parliament, NGOs and scholars, and visited cities and villages in the rural area. At the end of her nine days visiting the country, the Rapporteur presented her preliminary findings at a press conference. Before the mission, from June 30 to July 1st, she made use of a stop in Saint Petersburg to meet with representatives of the Russian civil society to discuss the housing situation in the city.

From June 13th to June 22nd, Rio de Janeiro will host the Rio +20, a United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. At the occasion, Rapporteur Raquel Rolnik will take part in some debates and events. Still in the same month, the Rapporteur will attend the international colloquium “Cities are us” in Coimbra University, Portugal. In addition, next month, the Rapporteur will make available leaflets and guides on forced evictions, which have been reprinted. Also in July, from 5th to 13th, the Rapporteur will go on a mission to Rwanda.

Housing Finance for the poor is the subject of the next thematic report – Newsletter #21


From July 5th to 13th, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing Raquel Rolnik will have an official visit to Rwanda. Currently, the Rapporteur is working on the elaboration of a new thematic report, which will focus the ways the finance system has been linked to the housing market in order to provide housing to low-income families.

UN Human Rights Council adopts resolution on the right to housing in the context of natural disasters – Newsletter #20


Last month, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution that defines what States should do to guarantee the right to housing in the context of prevention of natural disasters and also of reconstruction of regions that were affected by disasters. In these cases, the resolution requires that countries guarantee equal access to adequate housing to all those affected, with no discrimination of any kind and irrespective of the pre-disaster tenure status.

8th of March: International Women’s Day – Newsletter #19


Although, in recent decades, we, women, have taken great strides towards equal rights all over the world, on March 8th we are reminded that there is still much to do. On the International Women’s Day, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing stresses the urgent need for States to make all possible effort to guarantee the right of women to housing.

Special Rapporteur visits Israel and Occupied Palestinian Territory – Newsletter #18


On February 12, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Raquel Rolnik, concluded her official visit to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory holding a press conference in Jerusalem, in which she presented her preliminary findings. In March, the Rapporteur will present to the UN Human Rights Council, in Geneva, her Argentina and Algeria missions reports and also the thematic report on women and the right to housing.
