CEDAW: General recommendation No. 30 on women in conflict prevention, conflict and post-conflict situations

The primary aim and purpose of the general recommendation is to provide authoritative guidance to States parties on legislative, policy and other appropriate measures to ensure full compliance with their obligations under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women to protect, respect and fulfil women’s human rights. It also builds upon principles articulated in previously adopted general recommendations.

The report “Assessing the effectiveness of World Bank investments – The Gender Dimension” evaluates the extent to which the World Bank integrates gender concerns into its policies and investments, pointing out structural, financial and policy gaps that risk negatively impacting women in countries with Bank investments.

Avoiding reality: Land, institutions and humanitarian action in post-earthquake Haiti

The international aid response to the earthquake in Haiti is often spoken of as being unprecedented in its scale and in the nature of the challenges it faced. This paper in HPG’s “livelihoods and institutions” series suggests that most of the issues faced in Haiti were in fact common, if present to an unusual degree. This makes the aid response in Haiti a useful case study for understanding how aid agencies cope when emergency needs occur in the real, and highly imperfect, world.
