PRESS RELEASE – Most of two hundred million migrants denied basic right to housing

NEW YORK/GENEVA (22 October 2010) – “The inadequate and often appalling housing conditions faced by millions of international migrants around the world are mainly the result of discriminatory practices. This situation can be redressed only through the adoption of a truly human rights-based approach,” said the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Raquel Rolnik, during the presentation of her annual report* to the General Assembly in New York today.

 For the past 20 years, the roughly 1000 families that live in Vila Autódromo, a low-income community in western Rio de Janeiro, have been fighting off eviction.

Human Rights Council Extends the Mandate of the Special Rapporteur

The UN Human Rights Council, during its 15th session in late September, decided to extend for a period of three years the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing. Concerning the permanency of Raquel Rolnik as Special Rapporteur, initially stablished to end up on April 2011, it will be appreciated by the Council in March 2011, who will decide if her mandate should be extended for an additional period of three years.

UN extends mandate of Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing

1 October 2010 Reacting to the decision by the UN Human Rights Council currently meeting in Geneva, Switzerland to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing, COHRE today welcomed the move, saying that it demonstrated a commitment on the part of the international community to acknowledge the challenges the world still faces in terms of realizing the right to adequate housing for the worlds poorest.

The mandate of the Special Rapporteur has been extended for a period of three years, with a brief to promote the full realization of the right to adequate housing worldwide.

The Human Rights Council this morning adopted 12 texts in which it, among other things extended for three years the mandates of the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living; the Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples; the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism; and the Working Group on the use of mercenaries.

Kazakhstan: challenges and ways forward

Mission to Kazakhstan

From September 6-13, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Ms. Raquel Rolnik, will visit Kazakhstan. She will meet Government officials, local authorities and civil society organisations, to discuss the progress made and the difficulties encountered by Kazakhstan in the implementation of the right to adequate housing.
